Inhalant Abuse

Did you know there's a dangerous "high" found right in the backyard? It's contained in the exterior units of central air conditioning (AC) equipment. Deliberately inhaling the refrigerant is a form of inhalant abuse. Unfortunately, some kids are very aware of the mind-altering effects of refrigerants. This makes AC units an attractive target. By tapping into the unit's refrigerant lines, allowing the gas to escape, teens inhaling the gas risk permanent organ damage and even death.

The homeowner whose unit has been broken into may just notice that the AC isn't cooling as well as it used to. Replacing the stolen refrigerant can be expensive.

These problems – danger to teens and expensive repairs to HVAC units—can both be prevented now with a simple and inexpensive device called a locking cap. A small metal device, fitted onto the HVAC unit, this cap prevents unauthorized access to the refrigerant. Only a licensed HVAC contractor will have the special tool needed to remove the locking cap.

We are pleased to announce that the following local HVAC contractors, in partnership with the Virginia Poison Center, are committed to making our community safer for kids.
